The first roller coaster was Boomerang: Coast to Coaster, a standard model Vekoma Boomerang roller coaster. Thrilling Additions: Boomerang and Kong signaled the park's changing trend into a traditional amusement park.Bigger and badder thrills came in 1998 as the park's first roller coasters were built. The second addition was the Dinosphere Theater, a movie theater that has shown various 3D films over the years. The first addition was a new kids play area called Popeye's Seaport (now Looney Toons Seaport), which sports pint-sized attractions and a playground featuring foam ball guns. In 1997, the park got its first amusement rides hoping to boost attendance. Premier began to shift the focus on Marine World, focusing on more thrill rides than animal attractions, notably due to lackluster attendance. The city hired Premier Parks, a growing theme park chain in the late-1990's, to manage the park in late 1996. The next chapter in the park's history started off when the city got ownership of the park. ![]() The debt was then defaulted to the park's current owners, the city of Vallejo, California, in 1996. The park was operated by the non-profit Marine World Organization for the next ten years until debt became a burden for the organization. The taxes eventually became a burden on the park and in 1986, Marine World Africa USA moved from its old home in Redwood, California to its new and current home just fifty-five miles north, to an exansive 160-acre plot of land in Vallejo, California. In 1985, the land the park was situated on grew in value. For the next few years, more animals started to call Marine World their home until the mid-1980's. No matter how old or how young Six Flags Discovery Kingdom has something for everyone.Not much occurred during the early years of Marine World, but in the mid-1970's, Marine World merged with a failing land animal park called Africa USA to become Marine World Africa USA. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom competes with California’s Great America in Santa Clara, California. In addition with Six Flags Discovery Kingdom’s 2014 announcement the park also announced that Six Flags Discovery Kingdom will operate all year around. In 2013 the park debuted a new show called Drench which amazed people in the bay area.įor 2014 Six Flags Discovery Kingdom will add in Tsunami Soaker. Superman Ultimate Flight a groundbreaking Premier Launch coaster was added to the park for the 2012 season. Sky Screamer was added in the park for the 2011 season. In recent years the park has seen more rides, roller coasters and shows added to the park. The park also offers many animal shows like Odin’s Temple of the Tiger and Leo’s Lion Lair. Both coasters hold the record as the tallest roller coaster in The Bay Area. Medusa is a B&M floorless coaster added to the park in 2000. V2 is an Intamin Inverted steel launch coaster. To lower the height, the front tower was tilted to a 45-degree angle and the reverse tower lowered to 150 feet. In 2002, the ride was temporarily closed while the track was modified from 186 feet to the city ordinance limit of 150 feet. The two most unique coasters are V2: Vertical Velocity and Medusa. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom sits on 135 acres of land. bought the park from the city of Vallejo. On Januthe park announced Six Flags Discovery Kingdom as the new name of the park. In 1999 the park was re-branded to Six Flags Marine World. In 1997, Premier Parks bought the park and added new non-animal attractions. ![]() In the mid-1970’s Marine World merged with neighboring Africa USA to become Marine World Africa USA.
